- Much stronger than a 7.5 or 7.625 10 bolt

- No c-clips!

- Lighter than a 9 inch or 12 bolt

- Approximately ½ the cost of a 9 inch or 12 bolt

- 9 bolts have 4 pinion gears (aka spider gears) vs 2 in a 10 bolt

- Carrier bearing spacing on the 9 bolt is ~6 1/8 inches vs ~ 7 inches on the 10 bolt, which means less deflection!

- New ratios up to 4.10 are available, actually 5.13, but you'll need the visa card after 4.10 :)

- New series 3 posi carriers are available

- New mini spools are available

- Aftermarket axles are available, I personally recommend Moser Engineer.

- 9 bolts were the high performance option for 3rd gens

- Open carriers were available in the 9 bolt housing.

- Common factory ratios were 2.77, 3.27 & 3.45, uncommon factory ratios are 3.08. After market ratios are 3.70. Ratios that I offer are 3.23, 3.45, 3.73, 3.9 & 4.10 (actually 5.13 but bring your visa card, and 3.9 is special order).

- Almost all 9 bolts are posi disk brake units, but a few open drum units exist.

- Rear stud girdles/covers will be available spring of '02. (Currently in development testing)

- Full spools with 28 & 31 splines are available

- Used gear sets of 2.77, 3.27 & 3.45 ratios are currently available.

- Many other used 9 bolt parts are available (except for 89+ brake components). Contact me at info@diffsolutions.com with your needs.

- Series 3 carriers work with 3.23, 3.27, 3.45, 3.70, 3.73, 3.91 & 4.10 gear sets.

- Need a part or have a question still? Let me know via email and I will try to help.

- The proper way to set up a gear set is by checking the gear pattern. Pinion depth gauges are only for a reference!

- Complete install kits are readily available

- Rear cover gaskets are available

- Pinion seals are available

- The 9 bolt was discontinued by GM because of cost reasons

- One of the most common reasons a 9 bolt fails is due to excessive backlash between the ring gear and pinion (usually due to worn out pinion bearings or improper pinion preload) or between the side gear and the pinion gears (usually due to worn out brake (ie posi) cones). Either of these usually results in broken gear teeth.

What does BW mean? Price info? I was wondering about the cadillac 8.5" rear end too..

Borg Warner , it was used on the high end 3rd gens up to 89 I belive. Gears are very expensive for these cars. They are stronger than a 10 bolt, but not as strong as a 12 or ford 9 inch.
