Scott Hoag was a Ford Motor Co. engineer for 17 years and project manager for the Mustang Bullitt and Mach 1, two well-received, limited-edition models of the popular pony car.

He left the automaker to continue his high-performance tuning career as an entrepreneur. In January, he launched Mustang Racing Technologies Inc., or MRT.

MRT makes performance components for race cars and street vehicles. The company has locations in Northville and in Auburn, Ala., where Hoag's partner, Mike Rayburn, bases his StangNet.com Web site and affiliated businesses, including MRT's sales and distribution center.

MRT makes a body-in-white chassis -- the Mach1 Racer -- for those who want to compete in road course or drag racing.

MRT also markets replacement components for people who drive a Mustang GT, Bullitt or Mach 1 on the street and want to enhance their car's appearance and performance.

The company's first two products are a street performance suspension package and an H-pipe exhaust system.

Hoag said he designed the suspension package so customers won't need to worry about having to revise steering geometry or adjust wheel caster or camber. They simply can bolt on the new springs, struts and shocks and enjoy a car with a lowered stance and improved handling. The suspension kit costs $549.95.

The exhaust system is made from stainless steel tubing, bolts to the factory manifolds and includes catalysts. In addition to beefing up horsepower, Hoag said MRT's exhaust maintains that deep Mustang exhaust note rather than raising the pitch as X-pipe systems might do. MRT's exhaust costs $379.95.

Hoag now is at work on engine headers and additional performance parts.
