View Full Version : headers and cats

I'm looking at getting a set of headers, and I've got a few options. I want my car to pass emissions completely by having working cats. (let's not get into the illegality of relocating cats, I just want to have them)

1) Macs, with a catted Y - $730 This is probably the "simplest" setup, one vendor, bolt it up.

2) Bassani, with catted Y - $1200 - too expensive.

3) Long tubes, custom Y. I'm reading good things about the Pacesetter Long Tubes, a lot of people are getting good fits, they're really inexpensive (even coated), and seem to give similar bang for buck as other long tubes. $330 (headers only), $??? catted Y fab

So that leaves me with getting a catted Y. Will Nick be able to fab one up if I bring him some cats? Is it a ridiculous idea to simply relocate the stock cats? Am I too damn cheap for my own good?

What do you guys think?

Macs are a great bang for the buck, but their cats suck. Very restrictive.
I'd say go for the macs, knock out the cats, and get 02 sims. (I had a similar set up)

And relocating the stock cats will not work due to clearance issues. Quit beig cheap man!

I have to be cheap, I keep giving you all my money!

So your suggestion is Macs with Offroad Y, $530 + ~$90 O2 Sims = $620.

For $540, I can do the same thing with the coated Pacesetter long tubes.

Is there a greater value there? Aren't the macs considered mid-length?

have you looked at hookers? Thhey are a good value as well.

ok, here's the skinny.

IF and i mean if, i had to do this w/ cats, and was starting from scratch, i'd go with a set of hooker long tubes, or pace setters (either or, just get the coated ones, you'll thank yourself.) and use some random tech cats w/ a custom dual setup, i.e. nicks.. ect.. it wont be all that loud, still legal, and give you some nice gains, and not to mention being cheaper than a full mac setup (which are crap IMO anyway) , bassanai, SLP, QTP's ect.. ect... so,

more power + less $$ and meeting your requirements = a good deal. my .02

Vince, that sounds like what I'm looking for, except I want it to mate up with the stock cat-back.. I don't want to dump before the axle, and don't want to spend the bucks to go duals all the way out the back.

Nolan, I love the hookers on my car. Of course I have the ORY (no cats) and simms.. my car passes inspection :D

However, if you do want cats, like Vince said, I've heard great things about the Random Tech ones. If you take those to Nick he should be able to fab you up a great seatup w/o spending the $$ on duals all the way out :)

compromises, compromises...

you've got to pay to play bud..

Trista - Yeah, I figured Nick could...

Vince - I can afford true duals over the axle, but I'm not at (nor will I be in the near future) the power level where duals are necessary... so I'll be happy with a Y-Pipe for the foreseeable future.

And dumping before the axle is not an option.. I don't want the cabin noise, exhaust smells and rattling that might come from that.

Thanks folks.

Macs have worked out fine for me.
Plan on 400 for the headers, 200 for the cats, plus the money to fab a Y.

I don't see why people knock the Macs. Mine have produced some great results. Granted, I am leaving some hp on the table, but they still work fine.

Nolan, if it helps you out price-wise, I think I've got a pair of Random Tech 3" high flow cats in my garage... They have been used, but can easily be installed again and work fine.

I was thinking about $150 ish for the pair...

Sounds like a deal, Matt - can you hold them til the 15th?

Does anybody have a roundabout guesstimate for cost of fabbing the y we're talking about? Is it $50? $300? I honestly have no idea.

Edit - Don't hold them for me Matt, but if you still have them when I have decided exactly what I am going to do, I'll take them.

Sounds good to me! Just let me know if/when you want them!

Jet Hot has some headers out based on the Hooker design

http://www.jet-hot.com/pages/newheaders.html

the new catted Y-pipe has removable cats and are said to flow very well.

Go with the coated Hooker Longtubes.. They are the best bang for the buck.. Here is a link to the best price I've found on the headers and Y-pipe Good Luck..

I bet my true duals that end at the diff have less cabin noise than most that exit out the rear.

Who did your duals? I'll let you take me for a short ride around the parking lot on Sunday at TMCCC to hear it..

My old boss did.(I used to work for Miller muffler here in Lewisville)

I'll be glad to give you a ride so you can see how it sounds.

My car has less noise inside than my friends 02 SS with the SLP loudmouth on it.
